Sacramento - Willie's Burgers

willies_tamale.jpg

Sacramento isn't renown for being a hot spot, so imagine my surprise when a few weeks ago the New York Times had a whole piece on Sac in their Sunday travel section. Featured prominently in the NYT article is the downtown burger joint Willie's, whose owner cashed in the corporate life to run the restaurant.

I've Got Better Things To Do

A couple of summers ago I had the great fortune to be able to help a friend of mine a few hours a week with her Montessori pre-school. As the eldest of six kids growing up, loving children and not having my own, this experience was a welcome break from my usual high-tech reality. What so amazed me was that each of these 20 or so 3 and 4 year olds was a vast and extraordinary universe in and of him and herself. All of humanity's emotions, joys, despairs, and conflicts were played out every day in our little classroom.

My favorite student (and as much as teachers try otherwise, we all have our favorites) was a 4 year-old girl named Zoe. She sparkled with intelligence and enthusiasm and displayed unusual grace and maturity for her age. Everyone loved Zoe. So I was surprised one day when, during lunch, she asked to sit next to another student, Matthew (not his real name), and he ignored her, not letting her in. He continued to ignore her that day, even when Zoe asked him point blank, "Matthew, my feelings are hurt that you won't play with me. What did I do wrong? Why won't you play with me?"

Which Tarot Card Are You?

The Hierophant Card

You are the the Hierophant card. The Hierophant, called The Pope in some decks, is the preserver of cultural traditions. After entering The Emperor's society, The Hierophant teaches us its wisdom. The Hierophant learns and teaches our cultural traditions. The discoveries our ancestors have made influence the present. Without forces such as The Hierophant who are able to interpret and communicate traditional lore, each generation would have to begin to earn anew. As a force that is concentrated on our past and our culture, The Hierophant can sometimes be stubborn and set in his ways. This is a negative trait he shares with his zodiac sign, Taurus. But like Taurus he is productive. His traditional lore can provide a source of inspiration for the creatively inclined, and his knowledge provides an excellent foundation for those who come into their own in the business world.

HP DeskJet 5850 Printer Review

HP_DeskJet_5850.jpg

Last week I bought a brand new HP DeskJet 5850 Wireless Inkjet Printer from our local Apple store where it was a featured Apple-friendly printer. I bought it primarily because 1) I need a new printer and 2) it has a wireless networking option which would give me much more flexibility on where I could place the printer in my home office.

Polycom Phone Review

polycom.jpg

I work from home, often collaborating with colleagues from all around the country. Next to my computer and my chair I would have to say that the best office equipment investment I've made is in a dual phone/polycom conferencing phone. The official name of this product is the "Polycom SoundPoint Pro 2-Line Conferencing Speakerphone with Integrated Headset Amplifier". Unlike most speaker phones features that come with ordinary phones, the Polycom phone's speaker phone is full duplex, meaning that two people on a call can both talk at the same time and hear what each other is saying. Ordinary speaker phones only let one side talk at a time, making the natural free form of conversation difficult.

Folsom Rodeo

rodeo_folsom.jpg

Although independent ranching has been on the decline in California for years, the rodeo lives on. Every year around Fourth of July, the city of Folsom, California hosts its annual Pro Rodeo. Folsom, like so many of the outline towns around Sacramento, used to be surrounded by farm and ranchland. These days its acreage is covered with upscale housing developments, primarily bought by escapees from LA and the Bay Area who can get twice the house for half the price. Still the Folsom Rodeo draws locals and people from all over who love to watch the excitement of cowboys riding bucking broncos and bulls.
