Make Your Own Simply Recipes Cookbook with TasteBook

Make Your Own Simply Recipes Cookbook with TasteBook

Have you ever wanted to have a cookbook of your favorite recipes? Just the ones you love and use the most?

Simply Recipes started as a way for me to keep track of the recipes I grew up with, and to share them with my friends and extended family. My intention all along was to print out my favorite recipes, assemble them into a binder, and give them to my sister and brothers for Christmas. Well, that never happened; the web has a way of diverting one's attention. But it may this year because many of the recipes on Simply Recipes are now available on TasteBook, essentially a build-it-yourself, customizable cookbook, in which you choose just the recipes you want.

The Simply Recipes Classics TasteBook is a hard-bound binder with 90 pre-selected recipes from Simply Recipes and a credit for 10 more recipes of your choosing. You can remove any of the recipes you don't want, and add more that you do. You can even add your own recipes and photos to your TasteBook. TasteBook is also working with Epicurious (Gourmet, Bon Appetit) and Heidi of 101 Cookbooks, so you can add recipes from those sites to your customized TasteBook as well.

When I was first introduced to TasteBook, I thought "iTunes, but for recipes". That's pretty much it, and as easy to use as iTunes too. Featured collections like Simply Recipes Classics, or collections from other contributors, are like playlists that you can mix and match. Choose the recipes you want and even pick the cover for your book.

A note about the quality. The first time I held one of these books in my hands I spilled a cup of tea all over the pages. The ink didn't run, the pages dried out fine, and I'm still using that book. This is the kind of book that you can actually use in a kitchen while cooking. Because it is ring-bound, the pages lie flat. You can easily remove the pages if you want, or add more recipes to the book. It's also a beautiful book, one that I believe you would be proud to own or give as a gift.

TasteBooks cost $34.95 for one hard-bound binder with 100 recipes or recipe credits.

Almost forgot, another cool feature of TasteBook is that you can share your "playlists" with others. I plan to create more TasteBooks to share, around different themes and seasons, and using recipes from other websites as well. If you create your own TasteBook to share, please let us know about it in the comments.

Wow, this is a great idea Elise! One question, though, do you send overseas also, or is the price only applicable to residents in the States? Thanks!

At the moment TasteBook is only shipping to US addresses, though from what I understand they hope to add Canada soon. ~Elise

This is such a creative and inventive idea!! I have so many recipes hand-written, even scribbled, and on random word documents that I wondered how I would compile.
I like it

I saw these taste books a while ago and had only one problem. Unless you're adding a recipe from one of their already available recipes, you can not add a picture to the page. I personally like to have an image with each recipe (even if a small one) just as a basic idea of what the dish is supposed to come out looking like. If they would change it to where you could upload images along with recipes from other misc sites or blogs, then i would be completely sold on these.

Id also like to see more of a choice in selection for the tabs that devide the cookbook into sections. If you're making a cookbook strictly for desserts you really dont need the other tabs, but it would be nice to be able to choose tabs like cake, pie, pastry etc, instead of getting stuck with their generic selection of which the tabs would have no use in a cookbook of only one food style.

Note from Elise: TasteBook just announced the feature that lets you add your own photos to your book. I think also in the future there will be more options for the inserts.

Looks wonderful. Is there any way of putting more than 100 recipes in a book?

I think the ringed binder comfortably holds 100 recipes, so it sort of depends on how many pages the recipes are and how full you want the book to be. At the moment it doesn't look like you can buy recipes separate from a TasteBook, though I'm guessing that that will change. ~Elise

I love Taste Book and I just ordered one for my dad for Christmas. I only filled it about 1/3 full and I'll let him choose the rest of the recipes and add them later.

Susan:
They just updated it last week so that now you can add personal photos to your recipes. I do agree, however, that customizable tabs would be a lot better.

Awesome! I've been using del.icio.us to access my favourite recipes of yours but now I won't have to depend on an internet connection! :)

This is such a cool idea, I just shared it with everyone on my site. I only wish I had discovered it a little sooner, it would have made some great Christmas gifts!

This is such a cool idea! I've been looking into other on-line "make your own" book sites, but had not seen Taste Book. Thank you, Elise, for posting about it! Seems like there are all kinds of possibilities...

Brilliant indeed!
Elise, Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful recipes and knowledge with us. I never feel like I'm "just wasting time on the internet" when I'm reading your posts.
Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Awesome! I've been making a database on my computer and I was planning on finding a way to export it...but this is MUCH easier.
I hope you get some proceeds!!

I agree it's a wonderful idea -- I've already started putting a Tastebook together - but that

-- You need to be able to change the tabs
-- You need to be able to add more than 100 pages
-- They need to ship outside the US!

Has anyone tried this and have tips for using it? I put together one for me and my sweetheart. It was a combination of epicurious recipes and our own. It wasn't all that easy to do. A few bugs. As you do it you can figure out how to get things to work. I suspect the bugs will be worked out as time goes on. Does anybody have hints or questions?

I just made one of these for my mother-in-law for Christmas. I mostly entered personal recipes. And since I did not have time to cook up each recipe and photograph the outcome, I put pictures of her grandchildren with each recipe and a little blurb like "This cookie recipe is Hannah's favorite after-school snack." It made the book really personal and a keepsake I hope she'll cherish. I also only filled the book with about 20 recipes so she has 80 recipe credits to pick and choose her own favorites to add.

One of the best features of Tastebook is the ability to share recipes. My brother started making one up for himself and all we had to do was email each other our individual Tastebooks and I instantly had access to all his recipes and vice versa.

This is such a wonderful idea. I love the fact that you can actually customize your content.

Brilliant, Elise! :)

I love this! I planned to make a cookbook for a friend getting married and was at a loss as to how to proceed. Finding this site was perfect!

Is this a 3-ring binder that can easily be added to later with a standard 3-hole punch or is it hard-bound with the plastic ringlets (the actual term is completely escaping me right now).

Hi Kimberly, it is not a standard 3-ring binder. It is a custom multi-ring binder that opens and closes. ~Elise

I absolutely want one! I love the idea, only thing is I am in Canada. Are you shipping here now? I saw a post about this on December 2007 just wondering if there are any changes concerning shipping outside the U.S. Thanks in advance.

Hi Wendy, you can check the Tastebook site for their shipping policies. I don't know if there have been any changes yet. ~Elise

A word of warning for Canadians. We just spent a lot of time creating a Family cookbook on TasteBook. We were almost at 100 recipes when we checked out the final price. To order 10 books all shipped to one address, the shipping was 299.97 U.S. dollars, plus price of books, putting the total at over 600.00 Very disappointed.
