Make it 401 positive reviews ... I got this four years ago and while it only gets used maybe 8 times a year, it's so terrific to have UNUSUAL ice creams and without all the quirky preservative ingredients. Just last week I made a buttered pecan ice cream ... wonderful.

Does anybody know if gelato can be made in this ice cream maker? I tried to go through the reviews but I couldn't see anything about that.

Gelato is just a recipe, so sure it can be made

For the person who asked about gelato--I couldn't swear to it, because I don't know exactly what gelato is technically. However, I can't imagine any reason you couldn't make gelato in it, as long as it's made similar to ice cream and sorbet, which I imagine it is. I use this machine almost every week during the summer months (and on Passover as well) to make the most fabulous sorbets. My husband and guests always love them. Some of our favorites: Kiwi-lime, pink grapefruit, strawberry, chocolate, and pineapple. I have also made non-dairy "ice creams," with soy milk, for kosher reasons, and they have been great as well. My favorite is coffee soy "ice cream," made with various flavored ground coffee beans.

It's definitely worth it to get an extra bowl, if possible, so you can make more than one batch at a time; otherwise you have to wait until the bowl refreezes.

I got this wonderful and occaisionally deadly to a diet machine a few years ago for a birthday. It's really easy and can do so many things. And, just in case you really didn't have enough recipes for ice cream...

They have an incredible list of recipes, ones which, sad to say, I now have to try. Poor me! According to their site and an Italian friend, gelato is like regular ice cream in that you replace the cream with whole or 1% - 2% milk.

I have one of these. It came with 2 bowls, and I bought it at Sam's club for around $30.00. No shipping or handling, cheaper and 2 bowls. Check your local Sam's, Wal Mart or Costco stores as I have seen it at all of them at one time or another.

I bought one of these last summer, too. We used it frequently with nice results. Within 2 hours, you have a soft ice cream. My husband really likes his scoopable, so we freeze it in plastic containers for another couple of hours before eating.

As far as gelato, Yum, but I believe that it is more a process, as opposed to a recipe, that gives it that delicious dense texture, so I don't know if your results would be the same using this or any other maker.

I recieved a maker like this as a gift and it works great. I have to say I haven't used it as much as I've wanted too, but I hope to use it more over the summer. I actually made a delicious Strawberry Lemon Gelato that everyone loved. I'm not sure how authentic it was but it tasted great!

I got this book along with the ice cream maker. It has recipes for all the flavors you might expect, and then some! I'm looking forward to trying the Green Tea Ice Cream.

Actually I just bought one of those ice cream maker, I made some light vanilla ice cream, but I like it harder, not as soft, so I will try to freeze it. I tried to freeze some strawberry ice cream but it was not as good the day after, you could taste little ice. So maybe this type of ice cream can only be eaten the day it is made. My vanilla ice cream didn't turn as smooth as I thought it would be, it made little chunks. Gelato is made w/ eggs and italian cream called "panna" that you cannot find in the US, so you cannot make real gelato, you can only make the US version of gelato made w/ heavy cream, sugar and eggs.

This ice cream maker is great, and I recommend them, especially at this price.
Homemade ice cream will definately be harder once frozen (since there are no additives or gums), than store-bought ice cream. You just need to let it warm slightly before scooping and serving.

If your ice cream is a bit grainy/icy, be sure to chill your mixture thoroughly (at least 8 hrs) before churning, to avoid ice crystals. Ice creams with fruit, like strawberry, will always be a touch icy since fruit has so much water in it.

Love this easy machine, the ben and jerrys book is the way too go. I have made gelato in it, no problem, just using one more egg and whole milk with the cream gives a nice smooth mouth taste.
We love being able to make 1/2 batches. we don't need another center, I don't understand why people recoomend it. You can't store the ice cream in the maker.
You can get two twenty minute batches out of one frozen center.

Gelato does not have much air incorporated into it, only 15-20%. However most ice cream makers incorporate about 50% air into ice cream. But really, you can still make gelato with an ice cream maker.

I've been researching ice cream makers this week and I'm wondering if the 1.5 quart is sufficient - or if I should just go for the 2 qt right away. Anyone have any thoughts/opinions about capacity size?

I love my icecream maker. I can also make creamy slushies, mixed frozen drinks. I love the fact that everyone can benefit from this in the summer time, and it is so easy!!! Even if you need it to be just a slushy. I used mine a lot too already at graduations, family reunions, and just company at the house!

Yum,yum,yum!!! I love my sorbet maker. 15oz. can creme coconut,1/2cup lime juice.3/4cup water. Lets get fat!!!Freezes well.

We just purchased ours and after successfully making delicious "pudding" soft ice creams I tried to make a kool-aid type of slushie - but after a few minutes of running the inside beater blade started chattering (yes it was locked into place correctly) and I noticed the edges were building up with colored ice and not being scraped off like with the ice cream. More chattering and I stopped the machine and the beater blade was frozen in place due to the thick buildup along the sides and bottom - anyone else notice this or have a remedy?
