I'm pleased to announce that Simply Recipes will be hosting the fifteenth Is My Blog Burning (IMBB) monthly international food blogging event, come Sunday, May 22nd, 2005, with the theme "Has my blog jelled?".
The use of gelatin in cooking first became popular in the early 1900s when gelatin quality was finally stabilized. It grew to great popularity in the 50s and all sorts of aspics, jello salads, and gelatin mousses turned up regularly on banquet tables. (See The Gallery of Regrettable Food: Jell-O as the decline of Western Civilization is traced through Jell-O ads. For some ideas of what can be done with gelatin, see this Coconut pineapple terrine from a la cuisine, and this Berry and Banana Terrine from Simply Recipes. (And if you are really into retro adventure, see my grandmother's Pineapple Cucumber Lime Jello Salad recipe). Salmon mousse and some pâtés have been known to to use gelatin as well. For those of you who simply cannot bear the thought of gelatin (it is made from the hooves of cattle), the theme is extended to jellies as well, in this case the jelling agent is pectin and not gelatin. Update: Using agar (a seaweed extract) as a jelling agent will work fine too.
IMBB is open to all bloggers who write about food. Please post your jelled dish anytime from Friday, May 20th through Sunday, May 22nd, 2005 and email me the link to your post at recipes AT elise.com.
Update: See the round-up at Has My Blog Jelled Round-Up.
